Performance review and 1:1 software compared

For a manager or project lead choosing a tool for 1:1s, goals and reviews, or a head of people buying one for every manager. Facets’ manager tools beside Lattice, 15Five, Leapsome, Culture Amp, Workleap, Small Improvements, Teamflect and Betterworks: who pays, how 1:1s are kept, who writes the review and decides the rating, and what each publishes as a price.

Checked against each vendor’s public pages on . Sources at the foot.

What to compare

  • Who has to pay. Per employee, per user, per manager or a flat fee. Priced per employee, the bill grows with headcount even for people who never open the tool, so check whether the people being reviewed need a seat, or an account, at all.
  • The minimum. A minimum number of seats or a minimum yearly bill can matter more than the price per seat for a small team. Read it before the headline price.
  • How 1:1s are kept. An agenda both people add to, or notes the manager keeps; and whether meetings repeat on the calendar people already use, or only inside the tool.
  • Who decides the rating. If a model helps write reviews, check what it drafts, what is checked before the manager sees it, and who chooses the rating. A suggested rating changes what the review is.
  • What feeds a review. Whether survey answers, colleagues' comments or development conversations flow into performance records. Once people learn that they do, they tend to answer differently.
  • Where it reaches people. Email, a calendar, Slack or Microsoft Teams, a phone app. Check that invitations and reminders reach people where they already work.

A manager with eight reports pays the Manager plan's $7 a month, billed annually ($84 a year), and the eight people are never charged.

Each price is in the vendor’s own unit: a user, a seat, an employee, a manager or a flat fee, by the month or the year. We do not convert them, because the unit is part of the price.

Where Facets is different

  • Priced per manager. The seat is the manager’s. The people a manager leads, up to 35 of them, never pay, never sign in and never need an account, so the bill follows the number of managers, not the size of the company.
  • 1:1s that repeat on your calendar. Set a 1:1 to repeat every 1, 2 or 4 weeks and, since 26 October, send the person an emailed calendar invitation for it. Repeating 1:1s, check-ins and other key dates show on one calendar feed you can follow in Outlook or another calendar app.
  • Assessments where you choose the rating. Quarterly and end-of-year assessments start from your own answers, then written input from up to ten colleagues, then a draft a model writes from both. You choose the performance band and write why; the model never picks it, and the write-up fails its checks until the reason is written.
  • Growth and stay conversations, since 26 October. Record a growth conversation, about where someone wants to grow, and a stay conversation, about what keeps them. Neither is ever rated, and neither is read when an assessment is drafted or a message is written in Drafts.
  • More than reviews in the same seat. Drafts writes an email or message in your voice for you to send yourself, and idea boards and Projects let your team join by a personal link, with no account. Every AI tool draws on one allowance of 150 AI credits for each manager, counted over a rolling 30 days.

When another tool fits better

Choose another tool when one of these matters more to you than what Facets does differently:

  • Lattice. Lattice puts reviews, goals, 1:1s and engagement surveys in one product, with iOS and Android apps. Its 1:1 agendas are shared, so both people add topics and track action items.
  • 15Five. 15Five's 1:1s keep agendas, action items and notes, and its mobile app covers check-ins and 1-on-1s. Perform adds 360 reviews from managers, peers and direct reports.
  • Leapsome. Leapsome sells reviews, goals and engagement surveys as modules on one platform, with a 14-day free trial. Its AI Review Assistant suggests clearer wording while a manager writes.
  • Culture Amp. Culture Amp's AI Coach helps managers draft and refine reviews, and every plan includes Slack and Microsoft Teams integrations. Its 360s and engagement surveys sit in the same platform as its reviews.
  • Workleap. Workleap's agents schedule 1:1s, prepare agendas and draft reviews in the manager's voice. Engagement surveys, 360 reviews and goals come in the same plan, with Slack and Teams notifications and iOS and Android apps.
  • Small Improvements. In Small Improvements, manager and employee both add talking points before a 1:1, and meetings sync with Google Calendar or Office 365. It offers a 30-day free trial and a two-way Slack integration.
  • Teamflect. Teamflect works inside Microsoft Teams and is free for up to 10 users, with 1:1s, reviews, 360s, goals and surveys on that plan. Above 10, you pay for the people who use it rather than every employee.
  • Betterworks. Betterworks syncs 1:1s with Google and Outlook calendars, and employees can update goals and give feedback from Microsoft Teams. Its 1:1s keep a shared agenda, and unfinished topics roll over to the next meeting.

What Facets does not do

  • 1:1s reach people by email and a calendar feed, not through Slack or Microsoft Teams. A channel you connect receives check-in and survey notices and project and board posts, one way.
  • There is no organization-wide view of reviews for calibration. Each manager's assessments are their own.
  • There is no native mobile app yet, for iPhone or Android.
  • There is no plan at no charge, a pricing decision rather than a missing feature; the Manager plan has a 30-day trial.

Questions

How much does performance review software cost per employee?
Facets is priced per manager: $7 a manager a month, billed annually, and the people a manager leads are never charged. Each other tool's published price is in the table above, in its own unit.
Does every employee need a license?
No. In Facets only managers hold a seat. The people a manager leads, up to 35 of them, never sign in, never need an account and are never charged.
Can AI write performance reviews?
A model can draft one. In Facets it drafts from your own answers and colleagues' input, checks run on every draft, and you choose the performance band and write why. The model never picks the rating.
What is the difference between a 1:1 tool and a performance tool?
A 1:1 tool keeps the agenda, notes and schedule of regular meetings. A performance tool records goals, check-ins and reviews. Facets' manager seat does both, plus growth and stay conversations that are never rated.
Do survey answers end up in a performance record?
Not in Facets. Team survey and engagement answers do not move into the manager tools; the one route is a Leadership 360 summary the leader chooses to send. Growth and stay conversations are never rated or read into an assessment.
